Brackenfell encourages the holistic development of all learners and therefore encourages learners to participate in at least one summer and one winter sport.
Sport Objectives
- To establish a healthy balance between performance and participation.
- To encourage mass participation in a variety of sports.
- To help learners develop good sportsmanship and perseverance.
- To provide quality coaching and development for our learners
SUMMER SPORT
The school offers the following summer sports:
- Cricket
- Athletics
- Tennis
- Chess

Cricket
Cricket has really grown in numbers and enthusiasm in recent years. Annually a tour is undertaken in October for our first team. In the past it was a tour to the Southern Cape, but for the past four years it has been to Worcester and Robertson. Brackenfell Primary School's Sixes tournament is also something our players and other schools look forward to every year. Only 12 schools are invited and there are only six players in the team. Cricket is a wonderful game and we hope that the friendships and unity that comes from this game tha we love will be lasting.

Athletics
Athletics has always been one of the primary school's best sports when it comes to participation and numbers. This year had been no exception. The inter-house athletics event was a great success and a head-to-head battle until the end of the day. In 2024 we brought back the athletics as known before with introductions of our cheerleaders by our sponsor Millennium Floor for Brummer, Rawson for Stassen and SJC for Visser. Each house gets the opportunity to perform their war cry. The theme for 2024 was countries. Visser Eagles (USA), Springbok Stassen (SA) and the Brummer roses (ENG). Last year, we sent over 60 athletes to the Zonal Competition, and this year we boast four WP athletes (Chloey Heyneke, Christiaan Vermeulen, Matthew Feyt and Edwin du Toit).

Tennis
Our school has approximately 270 learners who participate in tennis. We have 11 teams competing in the league each year. The school's first teams also have a summer tour where the learners enjoy themselves. Every year our teams improve and our younger players show good progress which makes us excited for the future senior teams. The tennis practice takes place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and matches are played on Wednesdays. Westman tennis school also makes sure of optimal development for our learners. We produce excellent results every year when we participate in Top Schools as well as the Rising Star tennis tournament. We can proudly say that we produce several WP tennis players every year. This year is no exception. Madison Rudolph and Jean-Luke Venter are our two WP players for 2025.

Chess
Chess is an inclusive sport that can be played by people of all genders, of different ages and backgrounds, and people with physical disabilities. Playing chess has been proven to improve concentration, logic, IQ, creativity, self-control, problem-solving skills, memory, patience, and mathematical thinking. Brackenfell Primary offers chess to learners in the Foundation Phase (grades 1 to 3) and the Intermediate and Senior Phases (grades 4 to 7). Mrs Vera de Kock oversees the Foundation Phase Chess, and Mr Sias Jansen van Vuuren (F.I.D.E. School Instructor) is responsible for the Intermediate and Senior Phase Chess. Chess is a summer and winter sport. Our 2025 chess season starts in the 4th term of 2024 and ends in the 3rd term of 2025. We hold trials in the 4th term, train in the 1st term, and play league matches during the 2nd and 3rd term. The chess players at our school can participate in chess by playing in a team and by competing in individual tournaments. Our school takes part in the Metro Schools Chess League and the Cape Town Junior Chess League. We would like to congratulate the following players, who received their Western Province colours in 2024: Victor Herman, Alexa Matthee, Cornelius Chilumba and Michael Conradie.
WINTER SPORT
The school offers the following winter sports:
- Rugby
- Netball
- Hockey
- Chess

Rugby
The rugby season is always one to look forward to. Our first rugby team annually tours Riversdal, Cradock and George during the year as preparation for the season. We have seen positive growth throughout the year, especially in our under-7s to under-9s. Coaches kick off the year with a referee course to make sure they are ready for the season ahead. In 2024 we had one WP Craven Week rugby player, Jediael Mbanzaswi, representing the u/13 team and two u/12 players. This year we have one WP player representing the U/13 academic team, Liam Burden. Liam was also one of the U/12 players who received their colours in 2024.

Netball
Since 1982, Brackenfell Primary School has been known as one of the netball schools in the Western Cape. In the last 43 years, there have been over 60 WP championship titles, and every year, a handful of players are selected for the WP teams. In 2025 we are proud to annouce that three players (Dion Nyangwa (u/13), Anemieke Theron (u/13) and Luniko Mahlungulu (u/12)) were selected for the WP teams, and Naudelle Miere (u/13) received her Western Cape colours. We have also been participating in the Top Schools Competition since 2015 and achieved 5th place with our u/12s in 2018, 9th place with our u/13s in 2019 and 5th place at the national competition in 2022 with our u/13s, and in 2024 both our u/12A and u/13A teams are through as the Western Cape champions and placed in the top 10 in South Africa!

Hockey
In 1999 we did a census at school and found that there was definitely a place for another sport. Hockey was born at Brackenfell Primary. The next year we started with two boys' teams (u/12 and u/13) and one coach. In 2001 we entered the league with a team in each age group from U/10 to U/13 for boys and girls. By 2003 we had 13 teams in the league and 8 very eager coaches. Currently we have 30 teams and 22 coaches, and we are competing in the Premier League. In 2022 we finally got our AstroTurf, where 80% of our matches and practices take place. Our U/13A boys and girls tour every year to the Southern Cape to participate in the Park Tournament and are truly good ambassadors for our school.
