GRADE R-3
Foundation Phase Academics at Brackenfell Primary School
THE TEACHER:
- Look at the content of the curriculum for each subject.
- Expand on the content to include more comprehensive and detailed information.
- Create challenges in the learning area for the “stronger” students; however, everyone should have access or the opportunity to tackle them.
- Use technology to solve “challenges.” Allow students to provide feedback in the language, written by giving models.
- Check all work daily – sign and date at the bottom.
METHODOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM
MATHEMATICS
Each Math period should be structured to include the following:
- Quick calculations (oral or written)
- Review and check practice work.
- Presentation of new work.
- Assistance to students experiencing problems.
- Assessment of work. Math should be checked daily. Drill work and understanding are continuous processes; one cannot exist without the other. Revision and repetition are extremely important. Students must be taught how to learn Math and master it easily – students must enjoy Math!!
LANGUAGES
Both languages are taught continuously. It is a well-known fact that language is learned and mastered through repetition and mainly by hearing. Reading aloud remains essential and should not be ignored. Reading must be taught. All aspects of reading must be taught.
HOMEWORK
Although students complete most of the day’s work in class, all students receive some form of homework. In Grades R to 3, students should receive work that needs to be practiced, about 20 to 30 minutes of practice work.
MARKING WORK
All teachers will have marking work. The importance of marking work is that one should not fall behind. All work used for assessment must be checked. Students may mark work in WCED books. Teachers remain responsible. All work must be checked daily by the teacher. The grade group determines which work should be used for assessment and carefully checked by the teacher. Writing and neatness are always important. All marking work is done with a red pen daily. At the bottom of the day’s work, your signature and date should be present.
PORTFOLIOS
Examples of students’ work should be kept in their portfolios. Exercise books as well as WCED workbooks are an important part of the student’s portfolio. Students’ formal assessment tasks are kept in a folder and form part of the student’s portfolio.
